Compact Nitrate Ion Meter
B-34X Series
Simple accurate nitrate testing for soils and crops
Measuring nitrate levels in crops is now essential to comply with legislation but there are other important benefits for the farmer of keeping track of these chemicals in both produce and soil to add value to food and limit the use of expensive fertiliser.
Now one of the world’s biggest measuring technology companies, Horiba, has launched a simple yet highly accurate instrument to help farmers carry out nitrate testing quickly and easily.
The twinNO 3 - digital checker is a range of three compact nitrate ion meters, for measuring nitrate levels in crops, soil and general purposes. Along with the digital checker, the product comes with simple to understand instructions and all the accessories needed to use it in the field.
Nitrogen is an essential nutrient for the growth of vegetables, and the use of nitrogen fertiliser has become commonplace in today’s farming world. But while nitrogen fertiliser increases crop yield, excess accumulates in crops as nitrate. In the human body, nitrate is converted to nitrous acid in the body, and this is associated with adverse effects on health. Nitrate can cause anoxia, which is potentially fatal, and is also linked to the generation of cancer causing compounds.
So monitoring and management of nitrate in crops and soil is essential. Increased awareness of food safety has inevitably led to legislation, including rules on the acceptable level of nitrate in crops.
In 2005, the EU set the allowable maximum value for nitrate in vegetables at under 2,000 parts per million.
Horiba’s compact Nitrate Ion Meter is a simple and accurate way to measure the levels of this chemical in crops and soil, and ensure produce complies with legislation.
Using the testing kit can also add value to produce and save on fertiliser costs. Low nitrate crops will appeal to modern consumers and buyers as safe, reliable and healthy food. They will also appeal to environmentally aware consumers and buyers.
Avoiding excessive use of expensive fertiliser can reduce costs, of course, and testing for nitrate levels in soil and crops allows for optimum use of fertiliser.
Horiba’s Nitrate Ion Meter is completely waterproof and has automatic calibration. It has a wide measuring range and direct measurement of crop juice levels, with a flat sensor enabling measurements of small sample volumes.
